In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus made a dramatic statement, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven (Mt 5:3). No one desires to be poor, but Jesus is saying that we must be, “poor in spirit to be a part of God’s family. Spiritual poverty is the full understanding that we don’t have our own spiritual credibility, that our righteousness balance is desperately overdrawn. We all have extensive rap sheets. But when we acknowledge our state of need before God, admitting that we’ve messed up and are unable to do it on our own, our lack intersects with the rich supply of the Lord Jesus Christ. When we plead our poverty, we become part of the wealthiest nation ever, the Kingdom of Heaven!
“…It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” Mt 9:12
